The Legacy of Imam Hussein: Tasua Day and the Traces of Resistance
Karbala has left profound marks on collective memory as the site of an unparalleled historical tragedy. The resistance of Imam Hussein—who stood for the universal message of Islam and the dignity of humankind—continues to resonate deeply in the hearts of many. Tasua, the ninth day of the month of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, precedes Ashura, the day marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his companions. Tasua represents the final day before this pivotal event. It is a time of prayer, devotion, and contemplation. On this day, people reflect on the suffering and injustice endured by Imam Hussein and his companions, commemorate their sacrifice, and offer prayers.
TASUA, one of the documentary photography projects by photographer and academician Habip Koçak, aims to convey the spiritual depth of these sacred days and the atmosphere of Karbala through a visual language. The photographs emphasize both the spiritual and historical significance of Tasua, while evoking the resistance of Imam Hussein and the sacrifices of his companions. Carefully selected from hundreds of frames, the images are intended not only to inform but to move the viewer—offering a visual experience that reveals the life of Imam Hussein and the enduring echoes of his resistance.
“Standing Against Oppression: Tasua and Imam Hussein” — Karbala is the epic stage of Imam Hussein’s unwavering stand. This sacred land bore witness to a tragedy that altered the course of history, blending suffering with sacrifice. Tasua and Ashura lie at the heart of this emotional and historical narrative: Tasua, the day of solemn reflection and prayer; Ashura, the day when courage and sacrifice were tested. This documentary photography project seeks to recreate that spiritual atmosphere through a powerful visual narrative. The photographs trace Imam Hussein’s footsteps through the dusty paths of Karbala, capturing the resolve and faith reflected in the eyes of his companions. In each frame lies a symbol of faith and resistance: the sorrow on Imam Hussein’s face as he walks toward his fate becomes a beacon of hope shining in the starless night.
